Effects of a Sedentary Lifestyle

#6

In this day and age new technologies are coming out daily. Whether these new devices are for work or leisure they help make our everyday life quicker, more efficient and more enjoyable. Regardless of their capabilities these devices are contributing to a major health risk in our society, sedentary. Technology is invented and developed to make our lives easy, safe and fun, but the problem is that many of these things take away from the physical activity that we need to stay healthy. A simple example of leisure technology is television. T.V. bounds many people to the couch for several hours of the day taking away from any sort of physical movement or exercise that they could be taking part in.

Being a couch potato can result in many serious problems such as anxiety, cardiovascular disease, depression, diabetes, and obesity. Also, the lack of movement related to leading a sedentary lifestyle can weaken and shrink the muscles which, in turn, results in a higher risk of injury when physical activity does take place. Being inactive is one of the leading causes of preventable deaths worldwide causing 1.9 millions death per year.

Preventing these unwanted health risks is as simple as lifting weight, running or even walking. Cycling is also a safe way to get into shape while preventing the use of a motor vehicle that may be emitting harmful chemicals into the atmosphere. It is highly recommended to stay active as much as possible in order to stay healthy and keep yourself safe from risk of injury or sickness.

I completely agree with this blog. I think that new technology is taking away from the physical activity we need to survive. Today we have things like television, computers, cell phones, vehicles, etc. that have almost completely eliminated the time and desire we have to be active. This blogger mentions how the television bounds many people to the couch for several hours of the day taking away from any physical exercise. This is very true and is only becoming a lager problem in us humans today.
I would like to add that our use of vehicles today also takes away a significant amount of physical exercise that we need. We barely walk anywhere anymore, even if it’s just around town. I live in a small town and can walk anywhere in a decent amount of time but I don’t. I think that we should all think twice about taking the vehicle to run an errand up town and instead walk, bike, or rollerblade.
I found it very interesting when this blogger wrote that a lack of movement and exercise can weaken and shrink your muscles and gives you a higher risk of getting injured when physical activity does take place. I was unaware that this could happen to your body and have learned that a lack of movement and exercise can really harm your muscles.
I think this blog has a lot of important information in it and should be really thought through because sedentary lifestyles are becoming a major problem in our world today. We should all shut off the TV and put down that cell phone and get active because if we don’t we are not going to live long, healthy lives.
My one question for blogger #6 is do you think people will wake up and realize we need to become more active soon or do you think we will continue to live sedentary lives?
